The Passage of Samaria Gorge is a fascinating experience. The hiker is confronted with nature and wild beauty. The length is 18 km. Mother Nature has cut its way through the bulky limestone masses that tower up from 200 to 2.000 m. The wideness of the ravine varies from 300 to 4 metres. Leisurely walking (Normal Samaria Route) you normally need 5 hours to reach the south coast.
Normal Samaria Route:
Tour starts from the North Coast, Chania. Arrive at the plateau of Omalos around 07:30 at an altitude of 1000 m. on the White Mountains where the adventure begins. The hike tour starts quite steeply down the ravine over rocks and stones through a forest with cool springs at shady resting sites. If you are lucky you might spot a “Kri-Kri” the wild mountain goat. At the end of the hike you reach the small fisher village of Agia Roumeli right at the Libyan Sea. From there take the boat for Sougia and then return by coach. Arrival back to Chania around 20:30.
Easy Pace Route:
Tour starts from the North Coast, Chania and at 07:30 there is a sort stop at Omalos where you will have free time for breakfast and take some pictures. Departure from Omalos to Sougia where you will take the boat to Agia Roumeli. Upon arrival at Agia Roumeli you can walk until the exit of the gorge, to the “Iron Gates” (optional with fee – not included) or swim and have a delicious lunch. Around 17:30 take the boat for Sougia and then return by coach. Arrival back to Chania around 20:30.
