Τhessaloniki is a great place to visit if you are going to Greece, either as a primary destination, a side trip from Athens, or a cruise. It is the 2nd largest city in Greece after Athens and it's located on the Aegean Sea on the Thermaic Gulf with beautiful beaches to enjoy. Given it’s a smaller city than Athens, it was quite affordable. You can visit some great historical sites in a less crowded atmosphere and it is only 310 miles from Athens so it is easy to get there.

The weather in Thessaloniki borders the Mediterranean climate - summers can be hot and humid, while winters can get chilly. Snow has also been witnessed during winter, but it is not frequent. The best time to visit Thessaloniki is Mid August to Mid October when you can enjoy many festivities along with great weather.

The ideal length of stay in Thessaloniki depends on your interests and what you want to experience, but generally, 2 to 3 days is sufficient to explore the city's main attractions.

2 days: This is enough time to visit the key historical and cultural sites like the White Tower, Aristotelous Square, Roman Forum, Basilica of Saint Demetrius, and the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki. You’ll also have time to enjoy the vibrant Ladadika district for its dining and nightlife.

3 days: If you have more time, you can dive deeper into the city's rich Byzantine history, visit the Museum of Byzantine Culture, and explore neighborhoods like Ano Poli for panoramic views and traditional architecture. With a third day, you could also take a short trip to nearby places like Mount Olympus, Pella, or the Halkidiki peninsula.

Ultimately, Thessaloniki is compact enough that 2-3 days is perfect to get a good feel for the city’s culture, history, and atmosphere. If you're into art, food, or day trips, you may want to extend your stay.
