Kavala, one of the most beautiful cities in Greece, rises like an amphitheatre up the sides of the foothills of Mt. Symvolo. Stunning modern architecture, spacious squares, and shopping centres on the west side of Kavala form a pleasant contrast to the traditional old houses, tiny gardens and the paved alleyways of the old city.
Don’t miss the Kamares aqueduct, the crenellated fortress, the Imaret. Board the blue and yellow train that takes visitors to the harbour and the upper town free of charge or enjoy your coffee in a chic café on the waterfront.
Not far from Kavala you can visit the archaeological site of Philippi, an ancient Macedonian city refounded as a Roman veteran-colony.
