Things to Do in Athens in Winter: Rainy-Day Ideas & Tours

Nov 3, 2026

Athens in winter keeps its big sights open. The Acropolis opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m., the Acropolis Museum stays open until 10 p.m. on Fridays, and our day trips to Delphi, Mycenae, Meteora and the Saronic islands keep leaving from Athens. What changes is the light, the weather and how people book. The sun sets around 5:10 p.m. in December, a dry morning is worth more than a dry afternoon, and our winter customers book their tours just a few days ahead. This guide covers what's open from November to March, how to plan around rain and which tours work best in the low season.

What our winter bookings show

Keytours has run tours in Athens since 1963. The figures below come straight from our booking system. They compare last winter, tours that took place from November 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026, with the summer before, June to September 2025. They include every sales channel, exclude canceled bookings and contain no personal data. They describe what our customers booked, not how crowded the sites were.

Day trips hold up far better than the Acropolis. We compared average bookings per month in each period. Our Delphi day trip kept 62% of its summer monthly volume through the winter, and the Mycenae and Epidaurus day trip kept 67%. The Early Access Acropolis & Parthenon tour kept 24%, about a quarter.

TourWinter bookings per month, as a share of summerTypical booking lead time in summerTypical booking lead time in winter

Meteora day trip by bus53%14 days2 days
Poros, Hydra & Aegina day cruise51%5 days3 days
Early Access Acropolis & Parthenon tour24%3 days2 days

"Typical" is the median: half of our customers booked closer to the date, half further ahead.

People decide late in winter. In summer, half of our Meteora customers book two weeks or more ahead. In winter, the median falls to two days. Delphi and Mycenae go from a week to three days. That means you can wait for the forecast before you pick your day trip.

Groups get smaller. On the Early Access Acropolis tour, the median group last winter was 4 people per departure, down from 6 in summer. On the Half Day Afternoon Tour to Cape Sounion, it fell from 10 to between 5 and 6.

January is the quietest month. For the Early Access Acropolis tour, Delphi, Meteora, the island cruise and the Sunset Tour, January had the fewest bookings of the winter. March was the busiest month for all of them except Meteora, where November matched it.

Athens weather and daylight in winter

Daylight is the constraint you can plan around. These are sunset times for central Athens, from the U.S. Naval Observatory:

DateSunriseSunset
November 15, 20267:06 a.m.5:13 p.m.
December 21, 20267:37 a.m.5:09 p.m.
January 15, 20277:40 a.m.5:29 p.m.
February 15, 20277:16 a.m.6:03 p.m.
March 15, 20276:37 a.m.6:32 p.m.

With a 5 p.m. closing time all winter, the Acropolis shuts right around sunset in December. For the weather itself, use the forecast from the Hellenic National Meteorological Service a day or two before, not monthly averages. Our day trip data says you can afford to wait that long.

The Acropolis in winter

Go in the morning. With the site closing at 5 p.m., a morning visit leaves you the afternoon for the museum, the Agora or a second plan if it rains. Our Early Access Acropolis & Parthenon tour lasts about two hours. This winter's calendar shows departures at 8:45 a.m., 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. from our office at 26 Athanasiou Diakou, and you can cancel for free up to 24 hours before. With a median of 4 people per departure last winter, it's a small group.

Pick the first dry morning. Bookings for this tour are made a median of two days ahead in winter. That's enough time to check the forecast and choose the morning. On our Acropolis and Old Athens tour, Christina Elaine wrote in November 2023: "It rained a bit, but he was a rock star in pivoting the schedule."

Dress for the hill. The official site rules recommend footwear suitable for walking and prohibit food and drinks. Our tour notes make an exception for water. Large bags aren't accepted at the cloakroom, but small backpacks are allowed.

If you need the elevator, call first. The Acropolis elevator for visitors with reduced mobility is not available in heavy weather or strong winds, and the official site asks you to phone the guards' office an hour before you arrive. On November 2, 2026, the site posted that the elevator was out of order. Check the current notice before you go.

Rather go on your own? Our Acropolis & Parthenon admission ticket comes with an optional audio guide that you download before you arrive, since there's no mobile signal on the Acropolis. Bring your own headphones. This ticket can't be refunded, so on a rainy week the guided tour, with free cancellation, gives you more room to move.

A rainy day in Athens

Start with the Acropolis Museum. It's indoors, it was built around the sculpture of the Acropolis monuments on the rock above it, and in winter it opens late on Fridays (until 10 p.m.) and on weekends (until 8 p.m.). If the rain stops in the morning, you can still climb the Acropolis before the 4:30 p.m. last entry. If it doesn't, keep the rock for the next dry morning.

If you'd like a guide inside, our Early Morning Walking Tour: Acropolis & Acropolis Museum covers both in about four hours, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

For a second indoor stop, the National Archaeological Museum is the largest archaeological museum in Greece, founded to house antiquities from all over the country. As of October 21, 2026, its website lists opening hours only until November 15, 2026, so check its winter schedule before you go. We sell an admission ticket with an optional audio guide for it.

A dry afternoon: the Ancient Agora and Plaka

The Ancient Agora sits below the Acropolis and closes at 4:30 p.m. in winter, with last entry at 4:10 p.m. Go after lunch, not at the end of the day. Plaka, the old neighborhood on the slopes of the Acropolis, is where you finish. Our Early Access to the Acropolis and Old Athens walking tour combines the Acropolis with a walk through the old town. This winter's calendar shows departures at 8:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Day trips from Athens in winter

Our day trips keep running through the low season. We checked our booking calendar on 14 dates from November 2026 to May 2027, the whole low season plus spring, and these departures were open on every one of them:

Day tripDeparture in our calendar
Delphi8:15 a.m.
Mycenae & Epidaurus8:15 a.m.
Meteora by bus8 a.m.
Poros, Hydra & Aegina day cruise7:30 a.m.
Cape Sounion Half Day Afternoon Tour3 p.m. (4 p.m. in March)

The Sunset Tour follows the sun. Last winter, the Sunset Tour to Cape Sounion left at 2:30 p.m. in December, at 2:30 or 3 p.m. in November and January, at 3 or 4 p.m. in February, and at 4 or 5 p.m. in March. Elvin, in March 2025: "It is very windy at the top of the mountain so dress accordingly."

Weather can change the plan. Our customers are honest about it. On Delphi, Rizz Jiwani wrote in December 2024: "We had an incredible experience on our Delphi tour, despite the rain!" Tracey, in February 2026, was less lucky: "Would have been much better without the rain." In February 2025, Stefanie Pornbacher's Delphi trip "was sadly canceled due to the weather but we were offered the option of taking part of a different route (we also could have postponed the tour)." On the island cruise, Jennifer wrote in February 2023: "we didn't see all 3 islands due to weather conditions."

On Meteora, winter can be the better season. Sheldon traveled on December 1, 2025: "weather was crisp, there were no crowds." If you're heading there, read our guide to Meteora in winter.

Our recommendation: keep your first dry morning for the Acropolis and fit the day trip around it, even if it means moving Delphi or Meteora by a day. The day trips had open departures on every date we checked this winter, and they cancel for free up to 24 hours before. Of everything in this guide, the Acropolis is the visit that depends most on the weather.

Christmas, New Year and holidays

Both the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum are closed on December 25, December 26 and January 1, and the museum closes early, at 3 p.m., on December 24 and 31. On March 25, the Acropolis is closed while the museum is open with free admission. Both are free on March 6, Melina Mercouri Day. For the festive season, see our guide to Christmas in Greece.

Who Athens in winter suits

  • First-time visitors: the Acropolis on the first dry morning, the Acropolis Museum the same afternoon, and one day trip.
  • Museum lovers: rainy days are museum days. The Acropolis Museum's Friday evening is the easiest way to see it without giving up daylight.
  • Travelers who want quiet: smaller groups on our tours and fewer bookings overall, especially in January.
  • Beach lovers: winter isn't your season. Our Poros, Hydra and Aegina cruise still runs in our winter calendar, as a day of island sightseeing.
