Athens Cruise Port Guide: One Day in Athens from Piraeus
The Athens cruise port is Piraeus, a separate port city on the coast, not central Athens. According to the Piraeus Port Authority, it has 11 berths for cruise ships and three passenger terminals, with a free shuttle bus between the ships and the terminals. On a typical port day you have around 12 hours alongside, and the Acropolis is the visit to build the day around. This guide covers how long ships stay, how to get into Athens and how to fit the Acropolis into one day.
How long cruise ships stay in Piraeus
The Port Authority publishes its cruise schedule for each year. We went through the 2026 schedule, dated October 16, 2026, and counted every same-day call that lists both an arrival and a departure time. There are 614 of them.
- The median call is 12 hours in port.
- Half of those ships leave at 6 p.m. or earlier. The median departure time is 6 p.m.
These are scheduled times. Your ship's all-aboard time comes earlier, so take it from the daily program on board, not from the port schedule.
When ships call
The 2027 schedule, dated October 3, 2026, shows how seasonal the port is. Here are the number of days each month with at least one cruise ship scheduled:
| Month | Days with a cruise ship in port |
| November 2026 | 25 of 30 |
| December 2026 | 25 of 31 |
| January 2027 | 23 of 31 |
| February 2027 | 12 of 28 |
| March 2027 | 27 of 31 |
| April 2027 | 26 of 30 |
| May 2027 | 31 of 31 |
In the same schedule, every single day from May to September 2027 has a cruise ship in Piraeus. In February, there are none on more than half the days. Schedules change, so treat this as a picture of the season, not a forecast for your ship.
Getting from the Athens cruise port to the city center
The Port Authority lists these public transport links from the cruise terminal area:
- the metro line
- bus 049 to Omonia
- bus X80 to Syntagma
- bus X96 to the airport
Fares and timetables change, so check them on the day. If you'd rather not deal with transfers, our cruise-port tours start with a driver who meets you at the port (see below).
What our cruise passengers book
Keytours has run tours in Athens since 1963. The figures below come straight from our booking system and cover every booking of our two cruise-port tours from June 2025 to October 2026, across all our sales channels, with canceled bookings excluded. They contain no personal data.
- They plan ahead. The median booking was made 24 days before the tour, and 40% were made 30 days or more ahead. For comparison, our Early Access Acropolis tour, which starts in the city, is usually booked two or three days ahead.
- They come in the main season. 98% of bookings were for tours between April and October.
- They start at 9 a.m. Every booking on these two tours started at 9 a.m.
- Many come from North America. 38% of bookings came from customers in the United States.
If you're on a cruise, book once you know your port day. Cruise passengers don't leave it to the last minute, and you shouldn't either.
A port day built around the Acropolis
The Acropolis is the one visit that can't move: it's on a hill with a timed entry, and it has to fit inside your call. Both of our cruise-port tours last about 5.5 hours, include a driver who picks you up at the port and brings you back, a licensed English-speaking guide and skip-the-ticket-line access, and enter the Acropolis in the 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. slot. With the 9 a.m. start our bookings show, you're back at the port around 2:30 p.m.
Will it fit your call? We checked that timing against the 614 same-day calls in the port's 2026 schedule. We assumed you need the ship alongside by 8:30 a.m., to get off in time for a 9 a.m. start, and a departure no earlier than 3:30 p.m., an hour after you're back. On those terms, the tour fits 96% of calls. The rest are ships that arrive after 8:30 a.m. (3% of calls) or leave before 3:30 p.m. (1%). If your ship is one of them, skip the cruise-port tours: take public transport to the Acropolis and use our Acropolis & Parthenon admission ticket, with its optional audio guide, at whatever time your call allows. You lose the transfer and the guide, but you don't put your all-aboard time at risk.
Choose between them by what you want after the Acropolis:

| Duration | 5.5 hours | 5.5 hours |
| Acropolis | Propylaia, Temple of Athena Nike, Parthenon, Erechtheion | Parthenon, Erechtheion, Temple of Athena Nike, Propylaia |
| After the Acropolis | 90-minute guided visit to the Acropolis Museum | 2 hours on your own in Athens, around Plaka |
| Free time | 30 minutes at the Acropolis | 2 hours at the end |
| Free cancellation | Up to 24 hours before | Up to 24 hours before |
Our recommendation: if this is your first time in Athens, take the Historical Tour. The Acropolis Museum was built around the sculpture of the monuments you've just seen, and the tour gives you an hour and a half there with a guide. The cost is free time: you get 30 minutes instead of two hours. If you've seen the museum before, or you want lunch in Plaka, the Mythology Tour gives you that time.
On the Historical Tour, Lemi wrote in January 2013 about a call that didn't go to plan: "Our ship was two hours late into port and the guide was still waiting for us at the designated place."
If you can't find a date for your call, our Early Access Acropolis & Parthenon walking tour starts from our office at 26 Athanasiou Diakou in central Athens. It lasts about two hours, and you reach the meeting point on your own, 15 minutes before departure.
If your cruise starts or ends in Athens
On embarkation or disembarkation day, plan around your luggage: the Acropolis cloakroom doesn't accept large luggage, only small backpacks and handbags. With a spare day before or after the cruise, our Delphi day trip leaves Athens at 8:15 a.m. and lasts about 10 hours. Our guide to getting around Athens covers the rest of the city, and our page on Piraeus covers the port town itself. For other ports, see all our shore excursions in Greece.
