Temple of Poseidon tickets: what you pay at the site

The archaeological site charges €20 for a full ticket and €10 for a reduced one (http://odysseus.culture.gr/h/3/eh355.jsp?obj_id=2390). Our Sunset and Half Day tours are sold on this site without the ticket, so you buy it at the entrance. "The ticket for the temple is 20€, which you pay directly at the entrance," wrote betty (June 3, 2025). The line can eat into your visit: "The long queue at the ticket counter cannot be skipped with this tour. This shortens the time spent at the temple," wrote susane (June 2, 2025).

Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon: a short history

The cape mattered to Athens for practical reasons. From here the city controlled the sea passage (http://odysseus.culture.gr/h/3/eh351.jsp?obj_id=2390) to the Aegean and Piraeus, and it watched over the Lavrion peninsula, whose silver mines helped make Athens a leading power in the 5th century BC. Herodotus describes a great festival the Athenians held here every four years. Officials sailed to it in a sacred ship, as they did to Delos.

The Temple of Poseidon. Worship here goes back at least to the 8th century BC. What you see today was built around 444-440 BC (http://odysseus.culture.gr/h/3/eh352.jsp?obj_id=2390), a Doric building in local marble from the Agrileza quarries. A frieze of Parian marble showed the battle with the Centaurs and the deeds of Theseus, read as an allegory of the Athenian victory over the Persians. It is attributed to the architect of the Temple of Hephaistos in the Athenian Agora. Its present state is largely the result of restoration work in the 1950s led by the architect and archaeologist Anastasios Orlandos.

Who the temple belonged to. For centuries visitors thought it was Athena's. The traveler Pausanias made that mistake in the 2nd century AD, and it stuck until 1900, when inscriptions found in the excavation proved the temple was Poseidon's (http://odysseus.culture.gr/h/3/eh351.jsp?obj_id=2390). The standing columns gave the cape its popular name, Kavokolones, and Romantic visitors, Lord Byron among them in 1810, carved their names into the marble.

The Temple of Athena. About 400 m northeast (http://odysseus.culture.gr/h/3/eh352.jsp?obj_id=2390) of Poseidon's sanctuary, on a low hill, stood the sanctuary of Athena. Its temple had an unusual plan, described by the Roman architect Vitruvius: a colonnade only on the east and south sides, with unfluted columns and Ionic capitals. In the Roman period it was taken down to its foundations and moved to adorn the Athenian Agora.

The fortress and the harbor. A wall about 400 m long cut the cape off from the mainland and enclosed about 4 hectares, with the sanctuary and a settlement that housed the garrison. On the rocky shore of the cove to the north, a ship shed 11.50 m wide was cut into the slope for hauling warships out of the water.

Planning your visit

• Getting there: Cape Sounion is about 70 km (43 miles) southeast of Athens, typically 1 to 1.5 hours by road along the coast through Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza. Traffic can stretch it: Casey (August 5, 2025) "ended up driving an hour and a half there and then two and a half hours back due to traffic."
• Opening hours: the site opens at 9:30 a.m. and closes at sunset, with last entry 20 minutes before (http://odysseus.culture.gr/h/3/eh355.jsp?obj_id=2390). Because the site closes at sunset, the return trip is timed around it. Péter (August 26, 2025) was asked to be at the bus at 8 p.m.: "The sunset happened while we were getting on the bus."
• Meeting point: for the Sunset Tour, be at our office 15 minutes before departure.
• What to bring: a light layer. "It's windy up there so a light jacket was handy," wrote Ashley_L (September 30, 2025), who also noted there's a café at the site. Olaf (October 26, 2025) suggests sitting on the right side of the bus on the way out for the sea views.

When things don't go to plan. Sunsets depend on the weather. "Weather was cloudy and raining for most of the trip so no sunset but not the organisers fault," wrote Katharina (October 21, 2025).
